More than 75 industry professionals from converting and supplier companies throughout North America filled the Akzo Nobel Center for Technical Excellence in October for an educational program on new technologies for narrow web. The two-day seminar, one of an on-going series sponsored by the ink manufacturer, was the most well attended to date. After an introductory discourse on the state of the narrow web marketplace, delivered by Label & Narrow Web Editor Jack Kenny, attendees paid close attention to detailed presentations about substrates, UV curing, ink testing and troubleshooting, ink management, anilox roll developments, plate mounting tapes, new plate technology, Hexachrome printing, color management, dyne level testing at press side, rotary screen techniques, digital UV inkjet breakthroughs, combination printing, and dieless foil application. Speakers were Ray Mackura and Ron Rodick of Avery Dennison Fasson Roll; Megan Daily of Klockner Pentaplast; Jim McCusker of Honle UV America; Richard Davis of Solatell; Dave Collins of Akzo Nobel Inks; Jerry Jenkins of LaserLife; Brian Burquest of 3M Company; Rick Cervarich of Dupont Cyrel; Eddy Tan of Lanscape; Joe Tuccitto of Dunwoody Institute; Todd Flowers of Pantone; Cindy Cole Semans of the Flexographic Technical Association; Ron Cronise of Stork GSE Dispensing; Steve Slater of X-Rite; Rick Young of Enercon Industries; Steve Liezert of Praxair Surface Technologies; Erik Jacob of Stork Rotaform; Richard Powell of Nilpeter; Chris Faust of Chromas Technologies; Chip Costello of Mark Andy; and Rob Kobe of API Foils. Akzo Nobel Inks’ Tom Hammer was the moderator of the seminar. Press demonstrations were held on the center’s Mark Andy 4150 press. These accompanied various aspects of presentations made over the two days, such as dyne testing and dieless foil application. One highlight of the event was an evening at the St. Paul Science Museum, located in the center of the state capital and on the shore of the Mississippi River.
